EC-17 vs EC-27 Hot Stamping Machine: Key Differences and FAQ

Mar 08, 2026

If you're choosing between the EC-17 and EC-27 hot stamping machines, understanding the differences in portability, work surface design, and compatibility can help you select the right tool for your workflow.

This guide explains the main differences between the two models and answers some of the most common questions from leathercrafters.

1. What’s the Difference Between the EC-17 and EC-27?

The main differences between the EC-17 and EC-27 are portability, work surface size, and temperature control system.

Portability and Weight

The EC-17 is designed to be more compact and lightweight, making it ideal for smaller workspaces or studios where portability is important.

Weight varies depending on the base material:

  • EC-17 (Walnut Base): 6.7 kg (without packaging)

  • EC-27 (Walnut Base): 14 kg (without packaging)

  • EC-27 (Metal Base): 16 kg (without packaging)

Because of its lighter build, the EC-17 is easier to move or reposition, while the EC-27 provides a heavier and more stable setup for larger projects.

Work Surface Design

The EC-17 features a 15 × 15 cm work surface, which works well for stamping small and flat leather pieces such as:

  • Wallets

  • Small tags

  • Card holders

The EC-27, however, has a 16 × 20 cm suspended work surface. This design allows more clearance underneath the plate, making it easier to stamp on larger leather goods, including:

  • Bags

  • Totes

  • Thicker leather projects

The suspended design also improves flexibility when working with items that cannot lay completely flat.

Temperature Control System

The two machines use different temperature controllers:

  • EC-17: Autonics temperature control system

  • EC-27: Omron temperature control system

Both brands are known for precision and reliability. However, the EC-27’s configuration is generally preferred for longer continuous working sessions.

2. Can the Machine Be Used With Die Cuts?

No.

The EC-17 and EC-27 machines are not designed for pressing die cuts.
They are specifically built for hot stamping and embossing applications.

Using the machine for die cutting may damage the equipment and is not recommended.

3. Can I Use Typesets From Other Brands?

Compatibility depends on the holder you use.

Holder 1 (More Flexible Compatibility)

Holder 1 supports custom copper molds up to 2.4 × 7.7 cm, which allows compatibility with many third-party molds.

However, there are a few adjustments to keep in mind:

  • The mold is aligned with the bottom edge of the holder.

  • Horizontal alignment is automatically centered.

  • Vertical positioning may require manual adjustment depending on mold size.

Because of this, it may take some testing to find the perfect stamping position.

Holder 2 (Designed for MAXITA Typesets)

Holder 2 supports molds from 0 to 6 × 8 cm and is designed for single-row typesets.

However, it is only compatible with MAXITA typesets.

Recommended Setup

For maximum flexibility, many users prefer to use both Holder 1 and Holder 2 together. This setup allows you to switch between:

  • Custom copper molds

  • MAXITA typesets

depending on the project requirements.

4. Can the Machine Stay On for Long Periods?

Yes.

Both machines are equipped with a stable temperature controller and built-in fuse protection, allowing them to run continuously for up to about 10 hours.

Under normal working conditions, you do not need to turn the machine off between projects.

5. What Is the Best Temperature for Hot Stamping?

The machine can reach a maximum temperature of 200°C, but most users find that 110–120°C works well for many materials.

However, the optimal temperature may vary depending on:

  • Leather type

  • Foil type

  • Stamp material

For the best results, it’s recommended to test the temperature on a scrap piece of leather first.

6. How Long Should Each Stamp Press Last?

In most cases, 2–3 seconds of pressure is enough to achieve a clean and consistent hot stamp.

Actual results may vary depending on:

  • Temperature settings

  • Leather thickness

  • Foil quality

Running a quick test before starting production can help ensure the best results.
